WEST SACRAMENTO, CALIF., – As the summer months heat up, so do the complaints at Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Northeast California.
In 2016, the summer months of June, July, and August were the busiest for complaints. Auto dealerships were the most complained about industry, followed by fitness centers, and auto repair businesses.
We urge Northeastern California residents to do their research and know their rights as a consumer before hiring a company or making a purchase.
Before hiring a company, or making a purchase, BBB offers the following tips:
Research the business at bbb.org. Look at the company’s rating, reviews, and any possible complaints. Know that BBB Accredited Businesses agree to uphold Better Business Bureau’s eight Standards for Trust which include honoring promises, advertising honestly, and being responsive. Do they need a license? Many businesses, including auto repair shops and contractors, are required to be licensed with a state agency. Ask for the company’s licensing information before hiring them. Verify the license with the agency itself and make sure it is active and in good standing.
Know your refund and cancellation rights. If you’re signing a contract for services, ask the business about your cancellation rights and be sure it is included in your contract. If you’re making a purchase, be sure you understand the company’s refund and exchange policy, especially if they have a ‘no refund’ policy. If you have a contract, be sure to read it thoroughly. Do not be afraid to ask questions about anything you may not understand. Make sure that any promises made to you in person are included in your contract.
