Consumers will spend more than ever on Mother’s Day this year, with total spending expected to reach over $23 billion and nearly $2.6 billion of that sum dedicated to purchasing flowers. As the holiday approaches, Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina (BBB) wants to make sure consumers are able to sift through the variety of florist promotions and websites to find a trustworthy company that will create the perfect arrangement for mom.

“Whether buying a simple vase or an elaborate arrangement, it’s important to choose a reputable florist to ensure your order is properly filled,” said Mallory Wojciechowski, president and CEO of BBB serving Eastern NC. “Whether dealing with a florist in person or online, consumers should be sure to do their homework ahead of time in order to save heartbreak later.”

BBB offers the following advice for choosing a florist for Mother’s Day:

Research. As with any purchase, it’s important to do your homework and research the company first. Check with BBB to learn about a florist’s history and reviews from past customers.

Order early. Florists will be very busy on Mother’s Day and the selection of good quality flowers will dwindle as the day approaches. To ensure a stress-free delivery, consider placing your order earlier in the week.

Avoid hidden costs. It’s always a good idea, whether a holiday or not, to verify your order and total cost with a florist before placing your order. Some online florists may add on shipping and handling costs without you knowing.

Pay with credit card. Unfortunately, some flower arrangements are never delivered or your recipient might receive the wrong flowers. In either case, you could possibly dispute the charge if you pay with a credit card.
