The National Cyber Security Alliance is celebrating 14 years of educating consumers and businesses to stay safe online with its annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Anyone using the internet knows it is a fast-changing environment, which makes keeping up with the latest privacy and cybersecurity habits a must.  Luckily, the Stop. Think. Connect. campaign offers these tips all year long, but teams with other agencies like your Better Business Bureau during the month of October to make sure these online safety tips will reach you and all of your connected devices.

Stay Safe Online

Top Tips during National Cyber Security Awareness Month:

  • Keep a clean machine - Help eliminate the risk of viruses on your internet-connected devices and keep software and updates current.

  • Protect your personal information - Information about you, such as purchase history, email address and/or location, has value.  Research before you share. Educate yourself about how your information is collected by apps, websites and all connected devices.

  • Share with care - Think before posting about yourself and others online. Consider what a post reveals, who might see it and how it might affect you or others.

  • Own your online presence - Know what level of privacy and security are set on your sensitive accounts, especially for sharing on social media. It is OK to limit how and with whom you share information.

  • Lock down your login - Strong usernames and passwords are not always enough to protect sensitive accounts, like email, banking and social media. Consider enabling two-factor authentication or security keys whenever offered.
