BBB Warns of Local Advance Fee Inheritance Scam

February 14, 2017

Your Better Business Bureau is warning consumers of an advance fee inheritance scam that is utilizing a local address (459 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219) in order to appear more legitimate to potential victims. BBB has received correspondence that Royal Trust Bank is contacting people by mail claiming they are entitled to an inheritance payout of millions of dollars for an advance fee. However, no inheritance materializes once the advance fee is paid.

Upon investigation, BBB has verified that Royal Trust Bank is not registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State, as required by Pennsylvania law. In addition, Royal Trust Bank has an F rating with BBB based on the length of time the business has been operating and BBB concerns with the company’s business practices.

Your Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to consider it a red flag if they are being asked to pay money in order to receive money. Legitimate law firms, executors of wills and others who have been named to distribute estate funds to rightful heirs normally do not request you to pay a fee to find out about your share of an inheritance. Protect yourself by checking with relatives about recent deaths in the family and by checking with BBB to see if a BBB Business Profile exists for the business and/or if any scam reports have been submitted to BBB Scam Tracker.

If you have been the victim of an advance fee inheritance scam or if you receive suspicious correspondence in the mail regarding an unclaimed inheritance, report your experience to BBB Scam Tracker and your nearest Postal Inspector.
