Scholarship Promotes, Rewards Ethics in Sports

Ethical Athlete ChampionWith professional athletes making headlines for questionable behavior, Better Business Bureau serving Central, Northern, and Western Arizona (BBB) saw an opportunity to recognize high school athletes for doing the right thing. In its second year, the BBB Ethical Athlete program, presented by Isagenix, awards monthly scholarships to deserving student athletes across the state.

Nominated by coaches, teammates, and fans, two student athletes are selected each month to receive a $1,000 scholarship. At the end of the school year, BBB selects two Ethical Champions who receive an additional $2,500 scholarship.

“We believe it's never too early to make ethics a big deal,” said BBB President/CEO Matthew Fehling. “It is wonderful for star athletes to get the recognition they deserve, but let's not overlook the student who works hard and does the right thing no matter who is watching; those are the athletes we want to know about and honor with this award. Ultimately, those same ethical principles they display in sports will guide them in future careers and business.”

Prior to January 2017, only one student athlete was selected each month to receive a $500 scholarship. Thanks to the support of Isagenix, an international health and wellness company based in Arizona, the number of honorees and scholarship money has doubled.

“Isagenix is proud to partner with Better Business Bureau to celebrate high school athletes who demonstrate a commitment to the highest ethical standards,” said Travis Ogden, Isagenix President & Chief Operating Officer. “The award’s slogan to ‘Do the Right Thing’ aligns with our corporate values and our belief that integrity is the fundamental key to the sustainable success of an individual or a company. As a health and wellness company, Isagenix is particularly pleased to support a program that encourages young people to develop wholesome bodies, minds and morals.”

Each month, BBB and the Arizona Interscholastic Association review public nominations and select two ethical athletes - one male and one female - to honor. So far this school year, BBB has honored the following students for their commitment to ethics in sports:

Zachary Patterson

Mohave High School

Jacob Adams

Saguaro High School

Whitney Weaver

Mountain View High School

Charles Walker

Desert Ridge High School

Sarah Jane Schott

Prescott High School
