Shred Day and Financial Fitness Fair in Anchorage

Free Identity Theft Protection and Financial Event
October 10, 2017

Better Business Bureau Serving the Northwest and United Way of Anchorage are encouraging the community to attend this year’s Free Shred Day and Financial Fitness Fair on Saturday, Oct. 14. Alaskans can protect their identities and enhance their financial know-how at this free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Mall at Sears, located at 600 E. Northern Lights Blvd.

Free Shredding

During this time, BBB Serving the Northwest will be helping consumers keep their personal information secure and avoid identity theft with free shredding and cell phone recycling.

Alaskans are invited to bring their documents to the Benson parking lot to be disposed of by Shred Alaska. All shredding is free with a limit of three bags/boxes per person. Unwanted cell phones will also be collected for recycling.

With more than 8,500 pounds of documents and 35 cell phones collected from 300 cars last year, BBB is expecting a great turn out to help save the public from identity theft, fraud and other scams.

Financial Fitness Fair

Consumers are invited to venture inside the mall to explore the Financial Fitness Fair, where consumers can receive money saving tips, free coffee, refreshments and door prizes. Booths will be staffed by experts on finance, taxes and community resources. The free workshops will include:

  • Wills and Estate Planning (10:15 a.m.)

  • The Cyber Threat, Preventing Identity Theft (11:45 a.m.)

  • Are You Smarter Than a Scam Artist? Recognizing Medicare and other Scams (1:00 p.m.)
