Evaluation Conclusions

This organization has been evaluated according to the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability. This organization meets all those Standards and is a BBB Accredited Charity.

The YMCA desires to bring about meaningful change in individuals and communities by serving as a focused and accountable agency. At the Y, success is measured by engaging communities in three focus areas - youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Having a strong community can only be achieved by investing in children, by nurturing the potential of every child and teen, by improving the community's health, and by providing support to all of our neighbors. The YMCA is for everyone.

YMCA Child Development Services includes 3 state-licensed, year round Preschools providing quality education to young children. The YMCA Centers follow the Creative Curriculum which is based on extensive research of how young children learn. Core areas of instruction are literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, technology, healthy habits and spiritual, moral and social development. Along with these, the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are incorporated.

On the weekends, many of the YMCA children from low-income households don't have adequate food available at home that will fuel a robust appetite for learning and growing. On Monday mornings, YMCA teachers are forced to compete against hunger for the attention of their students. To address this problem, the YMCA has implemented NOW (Nutrition On Weekends), a Preschool Backpack Feeding Program. Children learn better and achieve more when they are well - nourished, are less likely to cause discipline problems, and are more likely to maintain a healthy body weight.

Industry Tips

In an effort to assist you in making a responsible decision, the BBB suggests you follow these guidelines:

1. Use your head as well as your heart. Beware of telephone solicitations. The ultimate telephone solicitation scam can result when callers secure your pledge for a donation to a non-existent charity.

2. If you are tempted to respond to a telephone appeal, request that literature be sent to you along with the organizations latest financial statement BEFORE you make a contribution. This information will allow you to determine how much of your donation actually goes to the cause, how much to fund raising and administrative costs.

3. Beware of "runners" who will be right over to pick up your check.

4. Never make cash donations, always pay by check with the endorsement made out to the charity, not the person collecting.

Bona fide solicitors will welcome the requests, and gladly furnish the information, bogus solicitors will not be able to provide this information or will attempt to talk themselves out of an uncomfortable situation and go on to a less "educated giver".
