Background

Tom Hart humbly volunteered on BBB Serving New Jersey’s Board of Directors from 2001 through 2016. He served as Chairman of the Board from 2005 to 2007 and as Chair of the Finance Committee for the majority of his tenure. Mr. Hart was a passionate advocate of BBB’s values of excellence, integrity, teamwork, trust and respect. This Scholarship honors the commitment Tom so kindly and selflessly made in support of BBB’s mission to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust.

Eligibility

The BBB Serving New Jersey’s Tom Hart Memorial Scholarship recognizes a high school student graduating in 2018, who personifies high ethics demonstrated through academic history, integrity/personal values, leadership, and community services.

The winner will receive a scholarship of $2,500 to an accredited college or university of his or her choice. The funds will be distributed directly to the school upon verification of the student’s college enrollment. The scholarship must be applied toward school-related expenses including tuition, books, or other related items.

Guidelines

Entries for the BBB Tom Hart Memorial Scholarship will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Judges will select the scholarship recipient based on their leadership, contributions to their communities and schools, academic accomplishments, and written essay exemplifying BBB Values. Decisions of the Scholarship Committee are final.

The applicant must be a full-time resident of New Jersey. The applicant must plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States on a full-time basis. The applicant must be graduating in 2018 and have a desire to continue his/her education.

Submission Period

The official submission period for entries is October 1, 2017 – February 15, 2018. Entries must be received at BBB by midnight February 15. The Scholarship will be presented in April 2018 at BBB’s Annual Meeting.

 

CRITERIA AND DOCUMENTATION

The criteria for the BBB Tom Hart Memorial Scholarship include: Academic 30%, Essay 30%, Leadership 20%, Community Service 20%.

 Academic

  • Enclose a copy of your most recent transcript.
  • Describe your post-secondary education plans.
  • Describe any awards received relating to your academic achievement.

Essay – BBB Value of Integrity

To accomplish our mission, BBB commits to the value of Integrity to guide our decisions and behavior.

Taking into consideration the above description of Integrity, write a concise essay exemplifying how your qualities, principles and actions embody integrity. Also explain why integrity is important to you and how you influence and/or motivate others to demonstrate integrity like yourself.

  • Essay must be 500 words or less, single spaced on one 8.5” x 11” page.
  • Completed entry form
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation: e.g., church, school official, coach, employer, community leader. Each letter should be 300 words or less, single spaced on one 8.5” x 11” page.

 Describe activities outside of school and within your community, such as religious or special community involvement. Include awards/honors or offices held.
