Former Head of FTC - Steve Baker Joins Better Business Bureau

Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Nebraska. South Dakota, The Kansas Plains and Southwest Iowa is pleased to announce that C. Steven Baker, former director for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the Midwest has joined the Bureau. As an International Investigations Specialist, Steve will be working with an alliance of five BBBs in analyzing and reporting on some of the most pervasive fraud issues that impact American consumers and businesses.

“Baker will serve as an advisor, consultant, writer and investigator for our BBB and the BBBs serving Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas and San Francisco,” stated BBB President and CEO Jim Hegarty. “I’m honored that our Bureau was selected to be a part of this alliance with one of BBB’s most valued long-term partners. I admire and truly appreciate the extensive knowledge and experience of Steve Baker. His work will be a huge asset to everyone we serve.”

Steve was Director of the FTC’s Midwest Region for more than 25 years.  The Region covers the central United States, and has a primarily focus on consumer protection work for the Commission.

In his tenure at the FTC, Baker brought over 150 new consumer fraud cases to the federal courts including deceptive claims by large manufacturers, telemarketing violations, spammers, credit card fraud, and pioneered some of the original enforcement efforts against boiler room operations, Do Not Call violators, deceptive internet claims, and unsubstantiated TV Infomercials.

Baker played a key role in forming enforcement partnerships worldwide, and he organized over 25 enforcement sweeps closing and bringing to trial a variety of fraudulent enterprises.

He was the 2016 recipient of a BBB Torchbearer Award and the 2011 recipient of the FTC Chairman’s Award, the agency’s highest honor.  He is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law.
