Then we asked Jackson to finish the installation by checking all the connections and do a pressure test. We thought that, like with any professional company, Jackson's labor carried a one-year warranty.
The Jackson employee came on Feb 12.
The invoice, $171, states they did a "15 min pressure check" and concluded that "unit working good". They did not check any connections.
In July, 5 months later, the unit displays "coolant lost". We called Jackson back. They noted on July 13 that the unit lost all its freon, 2 lbs. of it. They noticed "suction line leaking at both fittings, indoor and out". They tightened the fittings, and charged me $240 for this work, plus $280 for refilling the freon.
We asked then about warranty. It is only then that they said they do not warranty their work on units they did not install. They did not tell us that ahead of time. If we had known, we would have chosen another provider.
And it is dishonest to offer services you do not warranty. This means that there is no recourse when they do shoddy work.
When I asked why he did not see the leaks on the Feb visit, the worker gave me some rigmarole about fittings heating and contracting, as if this enormous leak had been a normal wear-and-tear! This unit was highly rated by **********. They are supposed to last for years, not to lose all their Freon in 5 months. If the unit was leaking right with installation or if it was defective, finding this was the very reason why I asked Jackson to come in Feb. They did not find leaks or defects because they did a very bad job: They did not check for leaks, just did a pressure check.
If they had done their job right the first time, they would not have needed to come back later in July. There would not have been this second labor bill of $240, nor the $280 for the freon refill.
After these bills, we called them up to protest the impropriety of these later bills. We explained why, if they had done their job right the first time, there would not have been these later bills. We argued for 30-45 min, but they would not budge. They were intransigent, inflexible, stubborn in their self-righteousness.
They will not give us a warranty on their labor, no matter how bad their work is, if they haven't installed the unit, period. Then, they should have declined to work on my unit since they did not installed it. So, take note, why call for their labor then?
I have paid one bill, the freon one, $280. I'm thinking of not paying the other one, $240, for their shoddy labor, because that was labor they should have done on the first visit. If they sue me, I'm thinking of suing back for bad work and baseless, (illegitimate?) bills.
In addition to charging me for their bad job, they forgot to give me an estimate ahead of the July 13 repair. If I had known it would cost me $520, I would have gone to a more honest provider.
Copies of bills are available on demand.
I definitely would not recommend using this company to check a pre-installed unit. Neither would I recommend them to install anything because obviously, they don't know how to do a simple pressure check.
And I would not recommend them in general for anything because of their inflexibility and their work in bad faith.

Jackson Heating & Cooling Response

In July 2021 we were called out by Ms. M***** with a concern about the system and discovered the refrigerant line fittings installed by Mr. ***** had begun leaking. We tightened the fittings and added refrigerant. The repair invoice was $280.00. Ms. M***** paid the invoice but complained she should not be out $520 for the work performed by us.
In conclusion, we did work on the mini split for Mr. ***** and Ms. M*****. Both visits were proper and reasonably charged... a total of $451. We can find no basis for a complaint.
If Mr. ***** or Ms. M***** would like to discuss the matter further, I may be reached at ************.

Customer Response

The leak was catastrophic, which implies it was already present during the first visit because, since Jackson finally fixed that leak in July, the unit is working like a dream. No freon loss since.
The unit continued leaking after our own installation because the leak was not detected as it should have been, and was not fixed at that time.
And none of their work is under warranty! Stay away from this business if you want good, honest work done.
