AARP, BBB to Host Twin Cities Scam Jam

April 13, 2017

Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota ® (BBB) is once again partnering with AARP Minnesota and several other area organizations to offer Twin Cities Scam Jam Wednesday, April 26, at The Earle Brown Center in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. This free, interactive event aimed at educating seniors and caregivers about scams currently impacting the marketplace takes place from 8:00 a.m. to noon and is open to the public.

“Scam Jam events keep gaining momentum and we’re excited to help offer this initiative across our region,” said Lisa Jemtrud, Director of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota’s Educational Foundation, the Institute for Marketplace Ethics. “It’s a great opportunity to reach seniors directly and bring them up to speed on the schemes which target them on a daily basis.”

Nationwide, con artists steal billions of dollars from seniors every year. The good news is that there are many organizations and agencies offering proactive steps you can take to protect your finances from fraudsters.

Presenters at Twin Cities Scam Jam include: Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Trade Commission, Minnesota Department of Commerce, AARP, Better Business Bureau & Elder Justice Minnesota.

“In Minnesota, seniors are prime targets for both financial and health care fraud. Seniors are solicited by phone, mail and door to door for everything from investment opportunities to mortgage deals, to special health care offers and it is often difficult to tell the difference between the legitimate and the illegitimate,” said Will Phillips Director for AARP Minnesota.

Attendees will be able to visit with professionals representing local community organizations in our mini-exhibit hall starting at 8:00am and during program breaks. This is the fifth Scam Jam event offered in the last two years, with previous locations including: Minneapolis, Rochester, Fargo and Sartell.
