BBB Offers Tips for Grads

April 25, 2016

Vancouver, BC - The school year only has a couple of months left and that means thousands of BC grade twelve students are planning their graduation ceremonies. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them so the last thing they want is for a scammer to rob them and their family of any money saved for the special event.

Graduation ceremonies and the dinners that follow need to be organized well in terms of pick-up, flower availability. Other aspects like photography, limousines and clothing need to be set up, often months in advance.

“It’s not just scammers BBB wants to protect graduates from,” says Evan Kelly, Senior Communications Advisor for BBB serving Mainland BC. “We want them to research reputable businesses that are run well, with good reviews so their evening isn’t marred by organizations that aren’t.”

BBB serving Mainland BC offers these Graduation tips:

  • Graduation tickets – purchase directly from the school and not some third party.
  • Grad dresses and tuxedos – Buy from a reputable seller and be wary of online purchases claiming to high-end brands. If the price is too good to be true, it likely is.
  • Beauty appointments – schedule these far in advance as many places will be very busy this time of year.
  • Limousines – do your research and get a signed contract.
    • Know how many people are allowed.
    • Know the number of hours you are paying for and the cost per hour.
    • Determine if gratuity is included in the price.
    • Do a walk around the vehicle so you know if any damage was already present and take pictures.
  • Flowers – These can be a simple corsage or boutonniere or a full bouquet.
    • Use a reliable florist with order spelling out when it will be available and what types of flowers will be used.
  • Photography – Hiring a professional photographer to capture the moments is important to many.
    • Get a written contract so you know exactly what is include in the service.
    • Does the price include photo retouching?
    • Does the price include hard copies or a disk/downloads?
