Vancouver, BC – Better Business Bureau serving Mainland BC has been made aware of nefarious phone calls targeting local businesses. The caller claims to be from the BC Business Development Office, however, no such office exists.
The latest complaint to BBB is that the caller claimed the ‘BC Business Development Office’ is formerly known as Better Business Bureau. Nothing could be further from the truth and is gross misrepresentation of BBB serving Mainland BC.
“This of course, is concerning to us,” says Evan Kelly, Senior Communications Advisor for BBB serving Mainland BC. “What they are doing is illegal and tarnishing our name by connecting it to theirs. The latest incident involved a BBB Board Member who received a call from someone claiming they were formerly known as BBB. That call didn’t get far.”
While these calls are annoying and invasive, they don’t appear to be trying to steal private or personal information or money. What they appear to be after is information pertaining to the office itself: size of office, number of employees, and inquiring if the business has plans on moving locations.
“It is likely the callers are trying to generate sales leads for office moving companies,” adds Kelly. “These have been happening on and off for several years. Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot you can do about it other than ignore the call, or if you do speak to someone and they start asking these types of questions, just hang up. We just want to let people know these calls are out there and it’s not us making them.”
The numbers that show up on your call display are ‘spoofed’ and therefore difficult to track. Any call back made from your company is likely to find a busy signal.
If you have any concerns about this or any other scams please contact the authorities or your local BBB. For information on local businesses and to file a complaint or Customer Review go to bbb.org.
