BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky is alerting local consumers about the latest data breach announcement. Equifax, one of the three credit reporting bureaus, announced that personal information may have been exposed for about 143 million Americans.
See if you may be affected. Equifax has created a website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, for consumers to check to see if their information has been compromised. Equifax is also offering a free year of credit protection service through this site as well. Consumers can also call 866-447-7559 for more information.
Get a copy of your credit report. If you haven’t pulled a copy of your credit report lately, now is the time. Consumers can visit annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 to obtain a free copy. You can pull one free copy of your report from each of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) every 12 months.
Check your financial statements. Be sure to regularly monitor your bank and credit card statements. If you spot anything suspicious, contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
