Is Mulch Really THAT Important?

The answer is Yes! The benefits of mulch are endless, here are just a few:
- It benefits your soil:
Mulch keeps your soil cool. Without mulch, your soil would end up going from 70 degrees in the morning to almost 90 degrees in the afternoon - that’s over 20 degrees hotter than if you were to lay mulch. Mulch also helps retain water in your soil for moist rich grounds that lead to flourishing plants and flowers. Without mulch, nearly 80% of water evaporates, with it only a mere 10% evaporates, leaving more water in the soil for your plants. In addition to water retention and temperature control, adding mulch to your soil helps to soften the impact to the soil that tends to cause soil erosion, therefore when the water hits the ground it doesn’t take the soil with it, but just gets absorbed into the mulch. Lastly, mulch helps to keep your soil loose and prevents compaction of the soil which can then lead to a non-flourishing bed.
- It benefits your plants:
Plants that are grown in mulch, typically produce a higher yield than those that are not. Mulch also acts as a natural weed barrier that when paired with a preemptive weed prevention granular or spray and regular spraying, can help cut down the weed germination. Have a garden? Mulch is a great disease preventer, especially for foods like tomatoes. If you lay mulch, you cut down on the amount of disease that could splash up onto your vegetables from your soil when it rains.
- It enhances your curb appeal:
Mulch is the finishing touch on any home’s landscaping, leaving an aesthetically pleasing look to anyone who passes by, and letting you enjoy a finer looking yard.
