In early 2004, Michael Killen, now the president of Amish Yard, LLC, was employed by a small shop that sold Amish built sheds and furniture. The products were high quality and the Amish builders were meticulous and took pride in their craft. However, after disagreeing with the owners’ business practices for some time and receiving encouragement from an Amish acquaintance, Killen started his own business selling Amish buildings in the Pittsburgh area, motivated to treat people fairly while fulfilling all promises and commitments.
One evening while riding in the car with his father, Killen encountered a new “For Lease” sign on a road they had traveled on thousands of times. It felt as if he had been struck by lightning and he knew that this was going to be his shop. “I had the name ‘Amish Yard’ in my head for some time and was thinking about a logo when my brother-in-law pointed out that I had just found a horseshoe buried in the backyard,” recalls Killen. After receiving a $10,000 loan from his father and a lot of help painting and cleaning from friends and family, Killen opened the doors of Amish Yard, LLC for business in September 2007.
Amish Yard, LLC seeks out Amish builders and companies that match their values and over the years, the company has developed many outstanding relationships within the Amish community. Today, Amish Yard, LLC has three locations in the Pittsburgh area, as well as a fast-growing online store.
