The “can you hear me now?” scam has previously targeted businesses, but a new twist is now targeting consumers. Better Business Bureaus nationwide are receiving BBB Scam Tracker reports about this latest scam.
How the Scam Works:
You pick up your phone and the caller asks “can you hear me?” They are wanting you to answer “yes” or “sure” so they can record your voice. You may hear a pause or some background noise which is a continuation of the robocall.
Unfortunately, this “yes” may be used later to make it sound like you authorized a major purchase. Local consumers are reporting that the caller tells them they have won a trip to Disney World or a free cruise.
BBB Tips to Avoid a Phone Scam:
- Screen your calls. Use your Caller ID to screen your phone calls. If you don’t recognize a number, don’t pick up the phone.
- Just hang up. If someone does ask “can you hear me?,” simply hang up the phone. Don’t say yes or give out any other information.
- Report any suspicious calls. Consumers can visit bbb.org/scamtracker to report any calls and to warn others. This information is also shared with government and law enforcement agencies, so every little bit helps!
- Monitor your banking and credit card information. Scammers may already have some of your information and are using your “yes” to authorize other charges. Check your statements regularly for any unusual activity. It’s also a good idea to check your phone bills as well for any unauthorized charges, or “cramming.”
