Phishing Tops List of Most Reported Scams in the Northwest & Pacific

Northwest consumers reported losing more than $1 million to more than 3,200 scams in 2017, according to BBB Scam Tracker. Better Business Bureau Northwest & Pacific is issuing a consumer alert on the most reported scams2017.   

 Alaska: 

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes: 29 scams with nearly $850 lost  

  • Phishing: 22 scams with $0 lost 

  • Online Purchase: 14 scams with nearly $7,000 lost 

  • Tech Support: 14 scams with over $1,000 lost 

  • Employment: 12 scams with $30 lost 

 Hawaii 

  • Phishing 188 scams with $200 lost   

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes: 158 scams with nearly $85,000 lost   

  • Tax Collection: 147 scams with $500 lost   

  • Tech Support: 64 scams with $9,600 lost   

  • Government Grant: 62 scams with over $1,400 lost   

 Idaho 

  • Phishing: 193 scams with $1,000 lost 

  • Tax Collection: 148 scams with $1,900 lost 

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes:109 scams with over $610,000 lost 

  • Government Grant: 61 scams with $1,300 lost 

  • Tech Support: 12 scams with over $3,000 lost  

 Montana 

  • Phishing: 41 scams with $0 lost and $6,800 attempted 

  • Online Purchase: 19 scams with $5,700 lost 

  • Tech Support: 13 scams with nearly $3,000 lost 

  • Travel/Vacations: 61 scams with $0 lost 

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes: 7 scams with $0 lost 

 Oregon 

  • Phishing: 194 scams with $0 lost and $1,000 attempted  

  • Travel/Vacation: 70 scams with $5,000 lost  

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes: 57 scams with nearly $9,000 lost  

  • Online Purchase: 47 scams with over $50,000 lost  

  • Government Grant: 29 scams with $2,400 lost  

 Washington 

  • Phishing: 419 scams with over $4,700 lost 

  • Travel/Vacations: 159 scams with over $4,000 lost 

  • Tax Collection: 130 scams with $200 lost 

  • Online Purchase: 121 scams with over $30,500 lost 

  • Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes: 101 scams with over $1,200 lost
