BUT only four companies are allowed to contact you. Know these names – tape them to your fridge. They are: CBE - 1-800-910-5837 ConServe - 1-844-853-4875 Performant - 1-844-807-9367 Pioneer - 1-800-448-3531 Scammers may try to use one of these names so if you get a call, hang up and call the 800 number we’ve listed above. Using only these numbers means you will reach the actual company. They will confirm or deny if you owe taxes.
Other signs the call is a scam:
You have not received anything in writing from the IRS or the private debt collector that your debt has been transferred.
The caller wants to pay “right now” with a prepaid debt card, iTunes or gift card or wire transfer. Taxpayers will be informed about electronic payment options on IRS.gov. If you write a check, it should made out to US Treasury and direct directly to the IRS, not the private collection agency.
The caller threatens to bring the local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. This is not something the IRS does.
If you’re not sure if you owe unpaid taxes from a previous year, you can check your account balance at www.irs.gov/balancedue. If the account says zero, nothing is due and you won’t be getting a call from the IRS or the private firm.
