Specifically, complaints allege consumers receive an advertisement alleging for $37 they have been pre-approved for a platinum credit card membership with a guaranteed $10,000 credit limit valid exclusively toward all credit purchases from credit providers. What the consumer receives in the mail is a paper card and a magazine to order from. Consumers are not told the card received is not a major credit card and can only be used to purchase the company's merchandise. Complaints allege difficulty reaching the company at the telephone numbers provided.
The business states on their advertisement "You have been approved for this platinum card membership offer because you satisfied certain consumer criteria. Visa and MasterCard are registered trademarks of Visa International and MasterCard, Inc. respectively, and are unaffiliated with this offer or UWCS. In fact, we never represent or state that we are affiliated with any "union." Our name refers in part to the fact we provide services to union workers." The company further states "As part of the many benefits we offer, our members automatically become part of "Privilege Card International." Part of the benefits flowing from being a member of Privilege Card International is substantial discounts off motels, hotels and resorts throughout the United States and world, and assistance in receiving the lowest airfare, cruise prices and car rentals. All of those Membership benefits are described in detail in the Membership fulfillment package all Union Workers' members receive and at our website."
