You may have seen news stories about people lured into meeting someone for a transaction started online and then being robbed or assaulted. Do not become a victim. If you are buying or selling through a website or on social media and planning to meet a stranger to make an exchange, protect yourself:Never go to meet a stranger alone. Take someone with you as a witness to the transaction.Make sure your transaction is made in public.Always let someone know the time you are meeting a stranger.Never let anyone come to your home.Always exchange money through the process or payment methods provided by the website where you are buying or selling.Police Departments across the country are also trying to help by setting up "Safe Zones." These may be designated spots in a parking lot or other public places to help ensure a safe transaction between strangers. The spaces may be marked with a sign and some may have 24-hour surveillance.Reach out to your local law enforcement to see if they have this type of program in place. If they do, there are some questions you should ask:What are the hours for the "Safe Zone"? Are they only during business hours or after-hours as well?Should you come into the station before your exchange to let law enforcement know you are meeting someone?Physical safety is not the only concern when buying or selling online.
