COLUMBUS, OH – After this year's long and seemingly never-ending winter, homeowners are anxious to begin home improvement projects. BBB is warning homeowners looking to hire a contractor to tackle their home improvement projects to steer clear of three central Ohio companies. Homeowners report patterns of complaints alleging failure to deliver products, shoddy workmanship, and failure to complete projects. These three companies have received consumer down payments totaling $94,811.00.According to Kip Morse, President & CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Central Ohio, “There are many trustworthy, home improvement contractors in our area, but unfortunately, these three are less reputable contractors who have accepted payments for, but have not fulfilled work that they have contractually agreed to do.”Remodeling Group LLC has a pattern of complaints alleging failure to deliver and failure to remit refunds. Specifically, consumers have paid for products which were never delivered or installed. The business then promises to refund the monies, but fails to do so. On October 27, 2014, BBB contacted the business requesting their voluntary compliance in resolving complaints on file with BBB and providing steps it will implement to eliminate the pattern of customer complaints. The business responded in November indicating refunds would be provided. As of today, the refunds have not been provided. BBB contacted the business again on February 17, 2015, however have not received a response from the company.On March 6, 2015, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit in Franklin County Common Pleas, charging defendants Remodeling Group, LLC and Joshua Hickman Individually and dba Remodeling Group, LLC with unfair, deceptive and unconscionable acts in violation of the Ohio Consumer’s Sales Practices Act. Central Ohio Homeworks, LLC has a pattern of customer complaints alleging failure to deliver, and unsatisfactory customer service and service issues. Specifically, consumers allege work that is paid for is only partially completed, and the business fails to respond to requests for assistance. BBB records reflect Mr. Bryan A. On February 13, 2015 and March 17, 2015, BBB sent correspondence to Central Ohio Homeworks, LLC requesting their voluntary cooperation in resolving complaints on file with BBB and providing steps it will implement to eliminate the pattern of customer complaints; however, as of today, BBB has not received a response from the company.BBB complaints for NG Crown Roofing and Paving concern failure to deliver products and shoddy workmanship. Consumers allege that they have paid for work which hasn't been completed and workmanship is substandard. Consumers contracted this company for roofing, sealcoating, and concrete porch replacement. BBB files reflect the following alternate business names: - A & J Roofing, Asphalt and Seal Coating Specialists, Asphalt Specialist, J & N Services, Joshua Nicholas, Nicholas Paving, Quality Paving, Sealcoating and Concrete.BBB continues to seek help from the public on Joshua Nicholas dba NG Crown Roofing and Paving. Consumers are encouraged to contact BBB’s office at 614-486-6336. BBB offers the following general advice for consumers:Always check with BBB before doing business with any company to ensure they are reputable;Verify if the contractor is properly licensed, bonded, and has met insurance requirements in compliance with state regulations;Obtain at least three written estimates or bids for the work you are planning;Never sign a blank or partially completed contract;Never pay for the entire job in advance or pay cash to a salesperson or contractor. Typically, a down payment of 30 to 50 percent of the total contract price is made before the work is started with remaining payments to be made after completion of each phase of work; final payment should not be made until work is completed and you have inspected the work;Pay with a credit card. That way, you can dispute the charges under the Fair Credit Billing Act should the contractor fail to complete the job.
