It’s no surprise that April, the climax month of tax season, witnesses the height of IRS scams. BBB of Akron noticed the 387 scam reports nationwide regarding IRS scams in the month of April 2018, a 40% increase from the previous year. As these numbers demonstrate, the IRS scams are more prevalent than ever. The most popular form of contact for an IRS scam is by phone, which is contradictory to the IRS’s consistent method of contact of snail mail. Many of the local Ohio reports include a threat from the supposed IRS threatening a criminal arrest. It’s also common for the call to come from a Washington D.C. number, which can be spoofed utilizing something as simple as a phone app. The demands are often forceful and demand immediate action. It is common that even after tax day, these types of scams still continue. BBB warns of any similar calls insinuating an issue with your current tax filing. If you are unsure about the caller and the circumstance, hang up and call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040. Remember that the IRS will never call without sending you a mail notification first. They will also never demand or threaten to be paid over the phone. All legitimate payments to the IRS are sent to the United States Treasury. The IRS does not have the authority to revoke your driver’s license and will not resort to contacting the police to follow through with an arrest. Any of these threat tactics should be red flagged and ignored. The more you train yourself into identity theft and scam tactics and common lines, the more you protect yourself from wasted time and money.
