Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises St. Louis-area consumers to use caution when hiring J Evans Design and Remodeling. Consumers in Illinois and Missouri tell BBB the business did inferior work, failed to finish projects or offer refunds to those whose work was not completed. The business is based in the metro-east suburb of Troy, Ill., and is owned by Jarrod Magee. J Evans Design and Remodeling has an “F” rating, the lowest on BBB’s scale. In the past 14 months, BBB received seven complaints and reviews about the company. It did not answer three complaints and failed to resolve another. Two other reports involved subcontractors not being paid.In an interview with BBB last fall, Magee said he planned to address complaints made against his business. He failed to answer any of the complaints.“We aren’t trying to steal from anyone,” Magee told BBB.BBB heard from consumers on both sides of the Mississippi River who said they were not satisfied with the work they hired Magee to do. A Belleville, Ill., woman told BBB she paid Magee $25,000 in May 2017 for work that was not completed. The business was hired to remodel a bathroom as well as do other exterior and interior work at the residence.“It was a nightmare,” the woman told BBB. “Partially because the job they did sucked and they would not show up for days. They were just miserable to deal with. We fought the whole way. We sent them texts begging them to finish the work.”The woman told BBB the business left the bathroom work unfinished. The woman told BBB she suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1, a rare condition where tumors can grow along the nerves in skin, and needs a bathtub for therapy. The woman said Magee ripped out her tub, but never replaced it. She eventually had another company finish the work.Magee told BBB his company “took a break” from the woman’s job and that he would “make it up to her.” When contacted by BBB in February 2018, the woman said she had not heard from Magee and had not received a requested refund.Michelle L. Corey, St. Louis BBB president and CEO, said contractors need to make sure they are going to complete the work when they take on jobs. “Mr. Magee has an ethical obligation to pay refunds to customers who paid him in good faith for work he didn’t complete,” Corey said. “For him to abandon these people is wrong.”A New Baden, Ill., woman recently was awarded a $10,000 judgment against Magee after filing a civil suit in Clinton County Circuit Court. The woman had hired Magee to replace the floors in her residence. After the job was finished, the woman said parts of the floor began to buckle. She told BBB Magee refused to repair the work. The woman said she paid Magee $7,500 for the job.“My home is a mess because they didn’t want to do the right thing,” the woman told BBB. A Weldon Springs, Mo., man told BBB that Magee left a bathroom remodeling job at his residence unfinished early in 2017. The man said the work Magee did do on the project was done poorly. The man said it will cost nearly $4,000 to repair the work that Magee did.“Every day, I’m reminded of how poorly this project was handled,” the man told BBB. “I wouldn’t hire him to mow my lawn. It was that bad of an experience.” Magee’s business previously operated as JEM Services. Consumers told BBB that J Evans Design and Remodeling used to have its own website and a presence on Facebook. Neither the website nor the Facebook page is in operation.Magee said his business is doing more painting work.“I’ve made some changes,” Magee told BBB. “We’re still operating as J Evans, but we’ve gone back to our roots.”BBB offers the following tips on hiring home repair contractors here.
