Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York announces its annual Top Ten Complaint Categories, listing the business categories which received the most customer complaints in 2017. The announcement of the top ten complaint rankings for Metro New York BBB is held in conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week (March 4-10) to raise awareness of consumer issues.For the ninth consecutive year, Financial Services was the most complained about business category, with 6,016 complaints filed by consumers with Metro New York BBB. Complaints filed about Financial Service businesses in 2017 increased 12 percent from 2016. The second highest consumer complaint category, Telecommunications, received 4,057 complaints. The third category, complaints about Health & Beauty jumped by over 20 percent to 3,296 in 2017, and now occupies third place from fourth place in 2016. In total, consumers turned to BBB Metro New York more than 5.7 million times in 2017, which includes over 5.6 million inquiries about businesses. BBB Metro New York received over 42,900 complaints in 2017 and more than 31,300 Customer Reviews from consumers, a 40 percent increase from 2016. Throughout North America, total scam reports through the interactive BBB Scam TrackerSM service have now exceeded well over 100,000, with over 4,660 of those scam reports originating in New York. “We see the dramatic increase in Customer Reviews and reports to BBB’s Scam Trackersm website as positive developments in helping to educate and protect consumers,” said Claire Rosenzweig, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York. “When consumers check with BBB they can see both complaint and customer review histories to help them identify businesses they can trust, and they can also read about and report suspected scams that are happening in their community and nationally.” The Top Ten Complaint Categories for Metro New York BBB for 2017 are:1. Complaints about firms in this category generally involve non-delivery of product or service, dissatisfaction with product or service received, credit and billing issues, advertising concerns, failure to provide promised adjustments, problems with selling practices and failure to provide service.The Telecommunications category covers cable television service, and cellular and traditional telephone service providers.
