Better Business Bureau® (BBB) of the Upstate is issuing a warning on the company Custom Steel Garage Builders following a pattern of complaints filed against the business.BBB has received consumer complaints that allege the business, owned by James (Jack) Morris, is failing to follow through with a commitment to build custom steel garages. Complainants allege that they contract with Custom Steel Garage Builders to have a steel garage built of various sizes. Consumers allege that after the business received an initial deposit, the process of getting the business to begin work takes several weeks. Consumers allege they have paid the business thousands of dollars, have been left in varying stages of the building process, and the business stops communicating with them. When it became clear the business would not finish the work, the consumers asked to have a refund of the money already paid. The consumers allege the business did respond to their request with offers of a substantially lower refund. These consumers have since turned to the BBB to assist in retrieving full refunds for work that was paid for and not completed. BBB has attempted to reach James Morris by phone regarding the recent complaints against his business and have not received a return call to date. The business did respond to one complaint, but failed to address the complaint issue. BBB has been unable to verify licensing information with the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.Through the dispute resolution process, BBB found that James Morris has operated under substandard business practices before. BBB found two media stories that involved the same type of consumer concerns from BBB complaints in the North Carolina area. Morris conducted business under the name Metal Buildings of N.C. and went on to change the name to Carolina Custom Garages, followed by Morris Buildings. Consumers alleged that they paid the business several thousand dollars up front. Their building projects were left in varying stages and Morris’s response was that he blamed the economy. All the while taking consumers money and not following through with finishing the work. Before you hire any business, do your research.
