As Better Business Bureau wraps up its 100th year serving Greater Maryland, it’s focused on giving. To that end, the organization embarked on a Giving Tuesday campaign. Now, BBB has announced changes to the former BBB Educational Foundation that will enable the charity to add programs and serve a wider audience including early stage businesses and entrepreneurs. The new BBB Maryland Foundation will continue to provide free public information and consumer education on topics such as scams, investment fraud and identity theft. It sponsors the annual Shred Day, which destroyed 44.7 tons of personally identifiable documents for nearly 1,900 guests at two locations the last Saturday in April. The Foundation has a tradition of support for the military and military families including service in conjunction with Ft. Meade’s Military Control Board. “While the Foundation has been providing a handful of very well received programs, BBB was able to leverage our centennial anniversary to cement new partnerships with the startup community,” said Angie Barnett, president and CEO, BBB of Greater Maryland. “Thanks to seed funding from BGE and McCormick, we’ve taken BBB’s proven standards and developed an innovative curriculum to help emerging businesses succeed based on better business behaviors.”With a new charge, the Foundation’s mission aims to help entrepreneurs build and sustain ethical businesses and empower consumers and donors to buy and give with confidence. The goal is to groom ethical businesses from the ground up. The Foundation plans to supplement its annual Torch Awards for Ethics for businesses with three or more years’ experience with a separate program that recognizes younger businesses for ethics and integrity. “Not only will BBB Maryland Foundation be helping our state’s thriving startup ecosystem, our network of mentors will provide a holistic approach to support and keep employers local as they grow,” added Barnett. The Foundation is currently seeking Board members with experience in business start-ups, finance, human resources, sales, fundraising and donor cultivation.
