Richmond, VA- The hustle and bustle of this time of year lends itself to being distracted. There are parties to go to, chorus concerts to attend, and friends and family to visit. With all this going on who has time to think about why the phone is ringing, and even less time to think if the caller might be a fraudster.“We want everyone to be safe and sound this holiday season, but we also want you to remember that scammers don’t take a break for the holidays,” says Olivia Smith Communications Manager for BBBCV. “If you get a call from a number you don’t know, let it go into your voicemail and check it after.”If you do answer a call and there’s a recording requesting you to press a button or say “yes” for any reason, hang up the phone. This is a trick a scammer will use to identify a live number. Once your number is identified as active, scammers will continue calling or will sell your number to other scammers. If you answer “yes” to a recorded message, the scammer might then take that recording and use it to bill you for something you didn’t order.A proactive step to take in eliminating scam calls is to register your number on the National Do Not Call List to cut down on legitimate telemarketer calls. While a scammer is not going to pay attention to this list, it will be a red flag that a call you’ve received is more than likely a scammer on the other end.If you believe you’ve been a target of a scam call you should report this to the BBB Scam Tracker so that others can also become aware of this scam.Smith is the Communications Manager for BBB serving Central Virginia and can be reached at email@example.com for additional comment.About BBB: BBB serving Central Virginia serves Richmond, the Tri-Cities, Charlottesville, and Fredericksburg, as well as 42 surrounding counties from Fauquier to Mecklenburg and Northumberland to Amherst.
