Better Business Bureau® (BBB) of the Upstate South Carolina is warning consumers to be cautious when looking for love using online dating or matchmaking services. Consumers are alleging that a local online company called Peskypol, LLC, DBA Dating in Greenville, charges big bucks for mediocre online matchmaking services that do not deliver the promised local match results.Consumers have filed complaints with BBB stating that they paid for services in the Greenville, South Carolina, area and were mainly offered potential matches outside of Greenville. These consumers attempted to obtain a refund for services but have not received one. BBB reached out to the company on behalf of complainants, but we have yet to hear back. BBB also visited the location listed on their website and could not find a local office for Dating in Greenville.Upon further investigation, BBB also found that this company originates in Fort Mill, SC, and serves Charlotte, NC, and Columbia, SC, under the names Dating in Charlotte and Dating in Columbia. All three locations appear to fall under the universal name Dating in the Carolinas. As BBB compared locations, we also discovered that all three websites, which are still active, use the same “success story” text and simply change the name of the city based on the service area.“People are willing to pay to find true love,” said BBB President Vee Daniel. According to recent surveys, the amount that individuals will spend on U.S. online dating services this year is nearly one billion dollars. “Complaints against dating services are on the rise because more people are trying them.” said Daniel. In this particular case, the business came in and set up shop, did its marketing and gained clients, and then seemed to disappear from the area.BBB offers these four tips for finding your perfect match:Don’t fall in love too quickly. Beware of dating websites or matchmaking services with exaggerated advertising claims that promise more than they deliver.Say ‘NO’ to blind dates. Do a background check on the dating service with the BBB to make sure that the company doesn’t have a love-hate relationship with their customers.Don’t be pressured into commitment. Before you sign a contract, read it carefully, and make sure you understand the terms and conditions.Know what a ‘divorce’ will cost you. The dating service contract is like a pre-nuptial agreement. It details the costs associated with your relationship with the dating service and the costs associated if you ‘break-up’ with the dating service. Do not assume that the billing will stop when the contract ends. Many online dating sites automatically renew memberships unless the consumer specifically cancels the service.BBB encourages all consumers to research all businesses they plan on shopping with by visiting http://go.bbb.org/upstatesc and to follow BBB on Facebook at Better Business Bureau Upstate SC for news and tips about scams.-30-About BBB of the Upstate - Better Business Bureau® of the Upstate is a private, non-profit organization that serves the public interest by promoting ethical business practices.
