Pittsburgh, PA – November 1, 2017 – Your Better Business Bureau (BBB) and our event sponsors invite Western PA residents to BBB’s Secure Your ID Day. This free paper shredding event is being held by BBB in partnership with area businesses on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from 10 AM - 1 PM (or until at capacity) at Pleasant Hills Municipal Building (410 E. Bruceton Road, Pleasant Hills, PA 15236). BBB recognizes that identity theft continues to be a major concern for businesses and their customers, especially due to recent, high profile data breaches. Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the November 11th event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive documents. BBB staff will be on-site to guide cars through a moving line, offload disposable items and shred them on the spot. Free goodie bags containing educational advice and tips for identity theft protection will also be distributed to each vehicle. “Shredding sensitive documents and disposing of them in a safe manner is one simple way of fighting fraud that is within everyone’s control,” says Warren King, president of the Better Business Bureau of Western PA. “BBB is pleased to once again partner with the Borough of Pleasant Hills, Iron City Workplace Services and local Accredited Businesses to provide convenient access to this important service and take a visible and proactive stance in helping to fight fraud in our community.” In 2016, fraudsters stole $16 billion from a record high 15.4 million U.S. consumers, according to Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2017 Identity Fraud Study. The study also found that even though digitally connected consumers are at higher risk of falling victim to identity fraud, offline consumers take longer to detect fraud and incur higher fraud amounts than other fraud victims. BBB Secure Your ID Day attendees can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded and will take home tips and resources to help protect from identity theft. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders in advance. For more information about this free event, visit bbb.org or call 877.267.5222.
