Job markets ebb and flow all the time depending on consumer and business demand as well as the impact of emerging technologies and products. For example, these days it seems many people love the idea of coding and creating the next big game or app, making millions and retiring on a boat (if only it were that easy…). Also, many people are going all the way through four years of a university degree and even further to a masters or PHD as competition in the job market seems to be constantly heating up. It’s a dog eat dog world and you’ve just realized the soap you’re using is bacon flavoured. Such is life. What many people appear to be missing, however, is the opportunity to get into a trade. Even a trade with a 2-year educational curve can pay very well, and you don’t have to spend years in school racking up debt. In fact, there are many parts of the market that are in desperate need of skilled trades because fewer people are choosing to take that route. This Globe and Mail story points to some of the issues. In a nutshell, the lack of tradespeople is stunting economic growth. Many businesses are forced to hire foreign-skilled labour, but that’s a whole other political hot potato we won’t be getting into. Maybe you have higher hopes for your kids and don’t like any stigmas that labour related jobs come with as perhaps being too low brow, uneducated or just plain dirty. Sentiments like this could not be further from the truth. The sad part is, a majority of Canadian parents do not encourage their kids to get into the trades. Here are the top 5, highest paying trades that are in demand right now that anyone can get. 1. Elevator Repair Technician. Yep, who knew this would be a hot job right now. Average pay...over 70 grand. I hear the wage goes up...sorry...Dad joke. 2. Radiation Therapist. They work with oncologists to help administer radiation treatments in hospitals. Average pay...over 65 grand. 3. Geological and Petroleum Technician. Yes, this one will likely get you dirty. You have to collect soil and fossil fuel samples and compile reports. Average pay...over 60 grand. 4. Web Developer. Yes, far less dirty than a Geo-tech and certainly in demand given the advance of the Internet of things. Average pay...over 57 grand. 5. Dental Hygienist. People will always have teeth so this job will always be in demand. The average pay in this field is over 54 grand, however, you can make much more than that. There certainly are more options than just these five and most don’t require an expensive 4-year degree. It’s worth taking a look for a bright future.
