This company appears to be mimicking the Akron, Ohio based supplier of electricity to the northern Ohio area.

On April 5th, 2016, a Cleveland resident alerted BBB to a call from someone claiming to be with the supplier of her electricity.  The caller, "Angie", said the consumer was 3 months behind on their utility bill and that payment was needed to avoid a disconnection.  The Cleveland consumer knew something was wrong because the only company who serves her 44109 zip code is Cleveland Public Power and that provider also confirmed the account was current.

BBB called the 844-673-7339 phone which was answered by what sounds like "Fifth Energy Corporation" or "Fifth Energy Corporation".  It was then followed by prompts for different electricity suppliers in the northern Ohio area.  BBB selected Ohio Edison and spoke with "Angie" who claimed to be with First Energy Corporation located at 6896 Miller Road in Brecksville, Ohio.

Based on initial research it appears the caller is mimicking the legitimate company which is headquartered in Akron, Ohio.

BBB advises consumers to be wary of any calls from parties claiming to be from their utility company.

     * Local gas, water and electric companies do sometimes contact their customers by phone.  However, customers who are behind on their accounts receive written notices of a possible disconnection and how to prevent it.  Company representatives DO NOT call or email to demand immediate payment or threaten imminent shutoff.

     * Legitimate utility companies will not contact customers to request sensitive information such as social security numbers or bank account information.

     * Scam callers often use Caller ID spoofing software to misrepresent the source of a phone call to further mislead and confuse their targets.  Call-back numbers provided by these criminals often use greetings and hold messages that mimic legitimate businesses.  If you have any doubts about the status of your electric service, call your utility company using the numbers on our website to ask about your account.

     * If you feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call the customer service number on your utility bill. This will ensure you are speaking to a real representative.

     * Never allow anyone into your home to check electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or reported a problem. Also, ask utility employees for proper identification.
