Former Head of Chicago FTC - Steve Baker joins Better Business Bureau
May 18th, 2017 – BBB is very pleased to announce that C. Steven Baker has joined the Bureau. As International Investigations Specialist Steve will be working with five of the BBB’s in analyzing fraud issues reflected in the Bureau’s Scam Tracker system and researching particularly troublesome industries. Steve Bernas, President and CEO of the BBB of Chicago and Northern Illinois, says, “I’m honored to announce this alliance with one of our most valued long term partners. I admire and truly appreciated the steep knowledge and experience of Steve Baker, and his work with the BBB will be a huge asset to our consumers and businesses alike.
Baker will serve as an advisor, consultant, writer, and investigator for a network of Better Business Bureau’s including Chicago and Northern Illinois, St. Louis, Omaha, Dallas and San Francisco.
Steve was Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Midwest Region for more than 25 years.
In his tenure at the FTC, Baker brought over 150 new consumer fraud cases to the federal courts including deceptive claims by large manufacturers, telemarketing violations, spammers, credit card fraud, and pioneer some of the original enforcement efforts against boiler room operations, Do Not Call violators, deceptive internet claims, and unsubstantiated TV Infomercials.
Baker played a key role in forming enforcement partnerships worldwide, and he organized over 25 enforcement sweeps closing and bringing to trial a variety of fraudulent enterprises.
He was the 2016 recipient of the BBB’s Torchbearer Award and 2011 recipient of the FTC Chairman’s Award, the agency’s highest honor. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, where he was a Note and Comment Editor for the Iowa Law Review
