BBB Advises Independence Day Enthusiasts to Exercise Caution

this 4th of July Holiday Weekend

CHICAGO – June 30, 2017 – It can’t be July 4th without fireworks. But, Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois is reminding consumers that the sale and use of “consumer fireworks” – things like, bottle rockets, roman candles, and firecrackers is illegal in Illinois.

“In Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa fireworks of many sorts are legal” says, Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “And that is where people can end up in trouble when they buy them and bring them back home.”

Bernas notes, “If they are caught using any of the banned items during the July 4th holiday, the penalty imposed by the state law is stiff; up to one year in prison and/or a fine of $2,500. And depending on what municipality you live in there may be additional regulations and/or penalties.”

Unfortunately, fireworks sellers in border states often don’t tell out of state customers that using certain types of fireworks in Illinois is prohibited. Additionally, there is a federal law that makes transporting fireworks across state lines illegal.

The following items are not classified as consumer fireworks and are legal in Illinois:

  • Sparklers
  • Snake or glow worm pellets
  • Trick noisemakers known as party poppers

Here’s a full list
of legal and illegal fireworks from the Illinois State Marshal.

Holiday fun with family and friends also tends to put people in a more generous mood. And as the holiday approaches, patriotism will be running high in Chicago. Especially with the Department of Defense Warrior Games, a sporting competition featuring wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans representing teams from all branches of the military, taking over Chicago from June 30 to July 8th. BBB suggests when supporting any cause, always research them thoroughly using BBB Wise Giving Alliance at
