GET 2ND OPINION! My experience with North GA Equipment began in May, 2023, the week before Mother's Day. I noticed my AC unit was blowing, but not really cooling the house, and I was planning to bring my 92 yr old mother home from the NH for Mother's Day, thinking it could be my last Mother's Day with her and wanted everything in perfect working order. I googled heat/air folks and called North GA Equipment company. The technician came later the same day. He would check out the unit and see what the issue was. After a few mins, he came and said I had a leak and that I would need a new unit, and it would cost about $6000. (I'm glad he didn't have one on his truck!). He said he would add freon to my unit @ $100/lb and had no idea how long it would last since he had not located the leak. He said he added 2 lbs and would have the service mgr, Jay, order my new unit. I said that's not what i wanted to hear, but OK. After he left, I went and bought a window unit. Later that day, on phone with my friend, she recommended i call her repairman for a 2nd opinion - i'll call him Mr. X. I called Mr. X and he came out while I was gone the next day and checked the unit and thought he may have fixed the issue, but to give it a few days and let him know. Well, as I thought, my mom passed away the night after Mother's Day and of course, everything was forgotten. I never rec'd a bill from Mr. X, and after a couple of months when I got my head back together, I called Mr. X and asked him, I guess you found my leak because the AC unit still working great! He laughed and said, you never had a leak!! I was shocked!! He had removed the cover outside the house that was clogged with dust from neighbors moving dirt! He also told me to be sure to have the rusted pipes under the house replaced before using the heat because it would send carbon monoxide in the house as it was!!! Thank God for Mr. X and second opinions! Shame on North GA Equipment technician, I could be dead!

    North Georgia Equipment Company Response

Our technician was dispatched to the customer’s home on 5/10/23. He found the system low of refrigerant not allowing to it cool properly. He added two pounds of refrigerant R-22 to get the system going. Our technician suggested replacing the system considering its age and condition. The customer agreed to the replacement after being given a quote for the total job. Please note the customer was not charged for labor because it was understood we were going to replace the system within a few days of customer acceptance. On 5/11/23 the customer contacted our office to cancel the installation of the new system. We canceled the installation, and the customer was not charged anything else. The customer contacted our office in August, 2023 and told me that another company had found the outdoor coil was dirty and that was the reason for no cooling. She said the other company had come soon after we were there in May. I asked if the customer could send me a copy of the invoice from the other company. She informed me that she was not given a copy. Acting in good faith, I sent a refund check for the total amount the customer paid us on the initial visit. I feel like the refrigerant our technician added at least helped resolve the cooling issue, but I had no way to confirm it. Our technician did not check the rusted pipes under the customer’s home because he was there for a no-cooling call. I assume the rusted pipe was the furnace flue. I think North Georgia Equipment has handled this situation professionally and fairly. Jay P****** Service Manager
