I hired him to brick a detached garage. Very pleasant initially. We had a contract to withhold 10% until job completion. Showed up first 2 days and did good work. He gave me an invoice for his work that first week and he undercharged me. I pointed it out and paid him the higher correct amount. Rained out Monday. He Questioned whether he should come Tuesday due to wet footings. He then said his crew is on the way. I asked if they could do it without him. He said yes. He was going to doctor. He didnt show up. His crew showed up without him Wednesday also. He was unresponsive Wednesday. His crew was very nice. On Wednesday they were very upset with him and complained to me directly that he has not even called them. They finally got his wife to update them. On Thursday morning i noticed the front wall was crooked and not straight. He became very defensive and said I was nitpicking him. He then proceeded to accuse me of not paying him, although I had never suggested that. They took out the top 3 rows and re set them. Their excuse the mortar was too wet when cleaning the joints and the bricks slid back. I accepted with no questioning. He showed up to work on Friday with his team. I questioned how we had used double the mortar the brickyard calculated so far. He again got defensive. Although he had used around $1000 more mortar than expected. His excuse 20% of the mortar had already setup in the bags and he had to waste that. Once he told me that i got with the brickyard and they are working on replacing some. He told me was taking his equipment home for Maintenence don't worry he would be back. I paid him his weeks wages. The following Monday he snuck in picked up his mixer parked in the neighbors yard and rutted up the yard, stole the duel wire material i had prepaid him for. Upon checking that afternoon the walls are not level and will likely need rework by other masons. Beware of hiring him!
