ALGSD reports that it focuses its philanthropic efforts on the neediest of San Diego’s low-income citizens, especially its children. The organization offers individual support and enrichment for students in eight school districts, educational advocacy and scholarship assistance to students at San Diego’s Alternative High School and junior college graduates, and emergency assistance to victims of medical and physical emergencies. The elementary school-based Programs provide new school clothing, shoes and supplies, tutoring and reading materials, and after-school dance instruction by professionals from the San Diego Ballet. At Twain High School, ALGSD offers tutors, classroom and library aids, mentors and literacy advocates that support at-risk students. In addition, $3,000 scholarships are awarded to community college graduates who have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities in California. ALGSD’s emergency assistance programs provide teddy bears to children suffering traumatic events, stock emergency rooms with sweat suits and t-shirts for patients being discharged after a medical emergency, and offer hearing aids to children who would otherwise miss valuable learning time while theirs are either being repaired or replaced.
