Programs

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra is focusing its program resources to reach the goal of ‘doubling the number of children in northern Nevada reading at grade level by 2020.’ This is accomplished through a three-part framework, which encompasses strategies critical to early grade reading success: 1) a foundation of Strengthening Families by linking them with resources and services (2-1-1), providing prescription discounts through Familywize, helping families receive free tax assistance and the maximum refund possible through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and assistance with basic needs and services. Providing parents with these critical basic services means they are more able to nurture their child’s early development and learning; 2) Early Child Development: programs with parents and children aged birth to five years in areas of building parenting skills, child development stages, early learning skills and opportunities, and quality childcare; 3) Kindergarten Readiness / Early Grade Excellence, which includes developing early reading skills, parental involvement in learning and school readiness programs. This also includes improving the number and quality of early learning opportunities and providing quality, age appropriate books to children.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, UWNNS's program expenses were:
