Friend for Life Cancer Support Network connects adults recently diagnosed with cancer and/or cancer caregivers with a trained survivor of a similar experience. Friend for Life currently has over 300 Peer Navigators, which are volunteers who have experienced cancer as a patient and/or caregiver and have completed training by mental health professionals to prepare them for this role. The organization currently responds to 1,600 requests for support, information, and/or additional resources each year. There is no charge to receive these services. Friend for Life requires prospective Peer Navigators to complete a professionally directed training program before undertaking their role. Training is currently provided in live and online formats. Trainees are also asked to provide physician and personal references, and complete an interview with staff prior to serving as Peer Navigators. Other programs and services offered by the organization include sharing the lived experience of cancer with students of medicine, nursing, social work, physical and occupational therapy, with an overarching goal of improving patient-clinician communication and overall quality of care.
