SAFEHOME’S 35th year of serving victims of domestic violence was one of growth and accomplishment. During 2015, SAFEHOME successfully completed a much-needed facility expansion that included additional shelter bedrooms, expanded counseling space and an enlarged Children’s Center. With these changes, SAFEHOME was able to touch and save even more lives: • 25% more adults and children received therapeutic counseling • 28.14% fewer people had to be referred elsewhere because the shelter was full • 21% more children experienced therapeutic support and play in the Children’s Center In 2015, SAFEHOME’s comprehensive services reached 7,279 individuals. SAFEHOME has expanded services to diverse communities by recruiting three bilingual advocates and a full-time bilingual therapist. Understanding that survivors face critical and complex issues, SAFEHOME’s holistic approach includes a myriad of services including housing advocacy, individual and group therapy, legal services and court accompaniment, transitional housing, and immediate and long-term safety planning. Offering a comprehensive, holistic approach to changing – and even saving lives, SAFEHOME’s distinctive and effective features include: • SAFEHOME’s facility provides one central location for expanded shelter and services. Unique to SAFEHOME, the benefit of the hotel structure is that, unlike most shelters with shared bedrooms, individuals and families at SAFEHOME have a private space for healing. • SAFEHOME is the only domestic violence agency in Kansas with a full-time in-house staff attorney providing legal guidance and representation. On-site professional court advocates and a team of trained volunteers offer peace of mind as they assist clients with obtaining legal protection from their abuser and provide court accompaniment. • A broad community presence in local schools, hospitals, medical clinics and the District Court offices, making SAFEHOME services easily accessible to victims. • SAFEHOME is the only domestic violence agency in Johnson County, serving the greater Kansas City metro area.
