BBB Senior Awareness Program

Your BBB helps prevent scams against seniors with outreach to local elderly residents, their families, and their caregivers.

Other fraud may involve deception and sales tactics which mislead or pressure consumers into buying goods or services which they don’t really need.

Senior citizens are especially vulnerable to consumer fraud. They are generally more trusting of others. Since many are living on fixed incomes, they are often looking for ways to extend their limited dollars. The elderly can be easily confused by too many figures and facts. They may be lead to believe an enticing offer means something different than it really does.  Raised to be polite and accomodating, they often have difficulty saying "no" or hanging up on con artsists, and may be reluctant to admit when they are victimized for fear that their family members may think they can no longer handle their own affairs.

We know this, the scam artists know this, and now we're making sure the seniors know how to protect themselves!

BBB of Central New England makes presentations in central and western Massachusetts to groups of seniors and caregivers to help raise awareness of these dangers.  One of the most popular parts of these presentations is our binder full of copies of fake checks.  At your BBB, we hear all the time about fake check scams and try to pass this information along, but being able to see these fake checks in person - and to see how real they can look - is often an eye opener to the attendees.

We has found that the people who attend BBB events often have stories to share of incidents affecting themselves and often their friends, too.  Most attendees take extra copies of our literature to spread the word to friends who weren't able to attend.  Your BBB has done presentations in local senior centers, assisted living facilities, and at public events.

If you would like to schedule a presentation to a local group, we would love to hear from you!
