I used a water softener rental and maintenance service for a property I owned for several years. When I sold the property in April 2022, I arranged with the company, Culligan, to pick up their equipment. However, the new homeowners were interested in keeping the service, so Culligan didn't end up collecting the water softener. I personally called Culligan in April of 2022. They don't have a record of it in their notes, but they do have notes from a realtor call in May of 2022 requesting the new tenants take over the contract.Fast forward to May 2023, and I was surprised to receive a notice about my account being sent to collections. There had been no communication from Culligan since the previous year. When I called them, it turned out my email on file had been changed without my knowledge. I talked to a manager who said he'd hold off on sending my account to collections if I would try to contact the new homeowners to return the equipment. He mentioned they've had similar issues before and he's been trying to change how they handle these situations since he became a manager.I tried reaching out to the new homeowners, but had no luck. By December 2023, I started getting calls from a collection agency again. I called Culligan and spoke to same manager, but he didn't remember promising not to send my account to collections. To avoid any damage to my credit score, I decided to just pay off the final amount.
