  • BBB requested Modernize to address concerns of a pattern of complaints in which consumer allege receiving unsolicited spam emails or calls. Additionally, BBB requested Modernize to address how they obtain a consumer, a copy of a solicitation email, and a process breakdown once a consumer request a quote from their business.

Modernize responded to the response by stating the company generates roughly 4,000,000 leads from homeowners and went on to explain their business practices. According to Modernize, affiliate partners are contracted to send out promotional materials that is provided by the company.

In order to become an affiliate, companies must provide three trade references. Those references are called and vetted. Additionally, affiliates are required to agree to their terms and conditions, affiliates agree to use only promotional materials provided by Modernize(a violation will result in a breach of contract, termination and non-payment), affiliates are limited to a low daily lead cap for the first 10 days. Modernize stated this gives them the ability to review their account for compliance and ensure they are following guidelines. Affiliate accounts are then managed by a dedicated account manager.

Modernize also uses a suppression list, which a consumer can be put on if requested. All affiliate partners are required to suppress against proper list to ensure compliance. Modernize also said they will not know if an affiliate is adhering to their guidelines until a complaint is filed. Once it is, they immediately act.

BBB followed up Modernize's response with additional questions like how many contracted affiliates have been terminated due to complaints by BBB, how many total affiliates does Modernize contract with, how many affiliate accounts are handled by one manager, how affiliates obtain contact information from consumers, and breakdown of what happens when  a customer request a quote from the business.

Modernize responded to BBB's request by stating 15 affiliate contracts have been terminated due to complaints. Modernize additionally stated they contract with 125 affiliates and that each account manager handles 25 affiliates.

Since affiliates are separate companies from Modernize, the company said they are unsure how they obtain consumer contact information. Lastly, Modernize stated once a consumer requests information, their information is verified using real time online information verification system. The homeowner's data is then distributed to clients based on filters established when a business signs up with Modernize.
