Called marina about possible repair 6 mos prior to my headache with my Mercury engine, and told owner I wasn't thrilled with his overpriced service dept. Finally decided to take it in because engine would start out running perfectly but then after a while of use would just die if I tried to throttle up. Get a call from the service dept telling me I need a new carburetor @ $400. Told him to clean out carburetor. Receive a call 2 wks later to pick up engine, they had been using the wrong manual, but it was finished. Took boat/engine out, once again engine dies leaving us stranded on an extremely hot day. Third time taking engine back to be repaired the owner/mechanic Tim tells me I need a new engine. Told him "No, this is repairable. Why can't you fix it?" The next response I get is that I need a new fuel pump. Once again said "No that's not the problem." After a short conversation the owner/mechanic tries to tell me that the engine isn't broken in and the rings weren't sealing properly. So he supposedly soaked engine with some solution for 5 hours to get rings to seat. And once again it was fixed, or so they said. Nope!! Oil was coming out of the carburetor. And engine was running worse than it ever was.. Again take it back for repair this time taking the boat and all so the engine could be ran in open water not just a barrel. Was told it would be three weeks before they could get to it, due to a high volume of work in the shop. After a week, I get a call to pick up everything, supposedly repaired. Get it home and have to cut off the brand new ratchet straps we had to secure boat to trailer, because someone had tied them so ridiculously tight they couldn't be removed. The oil in the engine was jet black, when I had replaced before taking it in. gave up and took it to someone who used to repair marine engines and within two days it was fixed. The marina put me through all this just to sell an engine or at least high priced parts. Don't get swindled!!!
