The BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust kicked off National Consumer Protection Week with its inaugural BBB Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report. This report provides comprehensive insight into scams based on the more than 32,000 reports made to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016. The BBB Risk Index goes beyond scam volume to measure the true impact of a scam. It measures risk along three dimensions: exposure, susceptibility and monetary loss.
Tax scams were the number one scam reported to BBB in both 2015 and in 2016, but that didn’t even make the list of top ten riskiest scams as determined by the BBB Risk Index. Home improvement scams take the top spot as the riskiest scam of 2016 with fake check scams coming in second.
