The Wheeling, WV Shred Day event was held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Saint Michael Angelus Center parking lot. There were 157 cars in attendance bringing 5,500 pounds of documents to be commercially shredded and 10,000 pounds of electronic equipment to be recycled. This is highest attendance ever in the 4 years the BBB has held this event in Wheeling.
The BBB shred day event is held annually to provide consumers and businesses a safe and secure way to dispose of documents and electronics containing personal information. The BBB serving Canton Region & Greater West Virginia currently holds five shred events throughout the year in Canton, Ohio; Dover, OH; Charleston, WV; Huntington, WV and Wheeling, WV.
According to the 2017 Identity Fraud Study released by Javelin Strategy & Research, the number of identity theft victims increased from 13.1 million victims in 2015 to 15.4 million in 2016. The study also showed that scammers successfully stole $16 billion from consumers, up from $15 billion in just one year. Fifty-six percent of identity theft victims traced the theft to something that was stollen from their own possession.
