The BBB serving Canton Region & Greater West Virginia announces another productive year in fostering an ethical marketplace. Companies and consumers (both locally and nationally) rely on the BBB to provide valuable information on the performances of businesses and assist with marketplace disputes.

2014 Service Requests

Online Service Highlights

  • 658 thousand pages were viewed at www.bbb.org/canton
  • Nearly 400 thousand searched for a BBB Business Review.
  • 25,883 used the BBB's Online Directory of Accredited Businesses.
  • 237 consumers requested a quote for services from BBB Accredited Businesses via the BBB's Request-a-Quote program.

Complaint Service Highlights

  • Nearly 3,000 consumers sought complaint assistance.
  • 78% of complaints processed were resolved.

Consumers search for businesses with good ratings

  • 6,263 businesses in the BBB's service area have earned a BBB Rating of "B" or higher.
  • 45 times BBB contacted businesses to ensure advertising was truthful.
  • 804 businesses in the BBB's service area failed to eliminate sub-standard practices and earned an "F" rating from the BBB. 

Exposing Scams, Fraudsters & Misleading Conduct

  • 34 Investigations were conducted because of questionable business practices.
  • 21 news alerts were issued warning consumers of scams, business practices. violations, misleading advertising, persistent patterns, and companies with unanswered and unresolved complaints. 

Other ways the BBB improved the marketplace in 2014

  • BBB hosted 5 shred day events.
  • BBB is featured on WDPN and WNPQ weekly radio stations to inform consumers of latest scams.
  • The BBB's weekly "Straight Talk" article is featured in 6 newspapers in the BBB's service area.
  • 432 Customer Reviews were issued on businesses with positive & negative experiences with the company.

Expanding "Better Business" in the Canton Region & Greater West Virginia

  • The BBB's Accredited Business roster exceeds 1,700 businesses.
  • 333 businesses made a commitment to BBB Standards for Trust earning BBB Accreditation in 2014.
  • 21 businesses applied for BBB Accreditation but were denied due to their inability to meet the BBB's Standards for Trust.
  • BBB's Board of Directors revoked the accredited business status of 6 businesses that failed to honor the BBB's standards for trust.
