  • Brokers offering "guaranteed" loans for an up-front fee are operating illegally in Alberta. These brokers often place an advertisement in newspapers or telephone directories offerring attractive rates and providing toll-free numbers to call. Consumers advise the Bureau that during the call, they may be directed to send in an employment history/business details, social insurance number and other personal information. Shortly after, consumers may receive a call from the company saying that they are pre-approved for a loan and they need to send in an amount of money - a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The broker may claim that it is for first and/or last month's payments, security deposit, brokerage/administration fees or other reasons. Often consumers will be told to send the fee electronically in the form of a Western Union wire or else in the form of a cashier's cheque or postal money order by express courier. Be aware that these methods do not allow a stop payment by the consumer once they have been sent, since the loan broker receives the money the next day. What to Do: ** Do not send any money: If the operation is legitimate, you can ask them to take out any fees from the loan and forward the balance to you. Do not pay any fees in advance. ** Call Alberta Government Services, Consumer Services at 877-427-4088 or 780-427-4088 ** Call "Phonebusters". Everyone who has been offered a loan and is asked to send an advance fee should first telephone Phonebusters, who have a toll free number (888-495-8501), to report the loan company. Phonebusters is an operation run by the Ontario Provincial Police that works closely with other police forces in Canada, the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission in the United States. Phonebusters aims to collect data on Canadian advance fee loan brokers along with other telemarketing fraud operations in order to help close down such operations and convict their principles. Phonebusters has extensive files and unless the company is very new will have information on the operation.
