- Advertising Review:
On May 28, 2024, BBB contacted the business regarding claims made on its website and online advertising and requested they be substantiated, modified, or discontinued.
The business has made such claims as “Unmatched Service Excellence” and “Ontario Budget Comforts installation team is second to none in the GTA”. Superlative statements in advertisements about the tangible qualities and performance values of a product or service are objective claims for which the advertiser must possess substantiation as they can be based upon accepted standards or tests. BBB requested substantiation of these claims.
The business makes several references to rebates. Rebate promotions must clearly and conspicuously state the before rebate cost, as well as the amount of the rebate. Rebate promotions also must clearly and conspicuously disclose any additional terms and conditions that consumers need to know, including the key terms of any purchase requirements, additional fees, and when consumers can expect to receive their rebate.
Ontario Budget Comfort indicates they are second to none. Advertisers must not deceptively or falsely disparage a competitor or competing products or services in their advertising.BBB has requested substantiation of this claim.
The business has indicated they are partners with Panasonic, Bosche and Air-Quest and are displaying their logos. They also mention being partners with both Canada’s 2050 Net Zero target and their lending partners. BBB has requested substantiation.
BBB requested substantiation for several claims, which include:
"Estimated Bill Reduction - $1 000 - $2 000"
"Estimated Bill Reduction - $1 000 - $10 000"
"cutting your heating and cooling expenses by up to 50%"
"$2 000 annually to potentially saving $1 000 every year"
"long-term cost reductions"“substantial savings”
“not only covered but exceeded that cost, effectively putting money back into your pocket every month”
“no added costs to you”
“Cheapest Heat Pumps and Furnaces”
BBB attempted to substantiate these claims independently but were not successful. BBB’s Code of Advertising states that advertisers have a responsibility to possess substantiation for all claims made and should be able to provide that substantiation upon request. The business makes the following references:
"Rates starting at 0% - 10 years"
"All credit scores welcome"
“Rates starting at 0%”
“60 - 120 Month Terms”
“Up to $100,000 in funding”
“up to 40K in intrerest free loans”
“Subprime customers”
“up to one year interest free”
“Instant approval, No Income approval under $40 000”
Offering credit to consumers comes with numerous requirements which must be met. In addition, if promising financing, all customers should receive what is promised regardless of their creditworthiness or financial ability to pay. All qualifications and terms need to be clearly disclosed in the advertisement.
The business advertises a “You could qualify for a free conversion". BBB’s Code of Advertising states that advertisers may use the term “free” if certain conditions are met and the offer is temporary. BBB could not locate an expiry date or specific details on the offer.
While the business was initially responsive to our requests, the business has since failed to make the requested modifications and has not provided substantiation for the advertised claims.
