This scam targets businesses and organizations of all types, attempting to fool them into paying for a listing or ad space in a non-existent directory or Yellow Pages. In some cases, the directory will technically exist, but will not be widely distributed and a listing will be of little or no value—these directories are essentially props in the scammer’s ploy.

With the ability to reach out to dozens, or even hundreds or thousands, of people at a time through email and social media, it may seem like everybody you know is in business for themselves and selling something. You may get invites to parties selling jewelry, clothing, makeup, kitchen gadgets, or health supplements or added to Facebook groups for “pop up shops.”

And each year, Better Business Bureau receives numerous complaints from consumers who feel that they were pressured into signing a contract. BBB also receives a lot of complaints from consumers about less-than-ethical companies that attempt to get them to switch their alarm service by claiming to be their current provider offering an “upgrade,” or saying the current provider has gone out of business or has been sold to the door-to-door salesperson’s business. If you are recruited for this industry, don’t work for a company that encourages dishonesty or pressures their salespeople into pressuring customers.
